JONES COUNTY, Miss. (WHLT) — A man is arrested for allegedly leaving the scene of an accident involving a school bus.
Deputies charged 30-year-old Jonathan Scott Pates with the crime. One student was injured in the accident.
Deputies said on Thursday around 3:30 p.m., they received a call about a crash involving a school bus and another vehicle. The incident occurred near Eastview and Keller.
When the accident happened, a student was getting ready to get off the bus. Deputies said the bus driver grabbed the teenager when they noticed what was about to happen. The student was injured and taken to the hospital. The driver who hit the bus did not stop.
Authorities said they received a call about a vehicle with extensive damage on Ponderosa Lane in Sandersville. The caller told deputies that they saw the driver get out of the truck, remove the license plate and go into the woods. Deputies were able to locate Pates and take him into custody.
Jones County officials said this is the first time they have charged someone for violating Nathan’s Law, legislation that was passed to enforce stronger penalties on drivers who violate traffic laws when a school bus is present, or if a child gets hurt.
The student who was injured has been released from the hospital.
