JONES COUNTY, Miss. (WJTV) — Three people died from a crash Wednesday morning after they were allegedly running from deputies in a 17-mile chase.
Authorities said 20-year-old Kayla Lovett, 33-year-old Josh Lovett, and 23-year-old Rustin Sims died in the crash.
Jones County Sheriff’s Deputies said the incident started near Eastview Road.
Officials said a deputy saw a vehicle coming towards him from the opposite direction with one headlight. We’re told that the vehicle was crossing the center line, and the deputy had to pull over on the shoulder to avoid being hit.
The deputy then tried to conduct a traffic stop. Officials said the driver kept going South on Eastview Road and ran a stop sign at Highway 84 East. The deputy followed the vehicle as it traveled toward Lower Myrick Road.
Authorities said another patrol car joined the pursuit, and the vehicle kept going. The driver turned left on Highway 15 South and authorities followed them for about 17 miles.
The driver lost control and hit a wood-line area. First responders and Mississippi Highway Patrol were called to the scene.
The coroner said Sims and Kayla and Josh Lovett died on the scene.
MHP is investigating the accident.
