Southern Miss Eliminated from NCAA Tallahassee Regional Sunday by South Alabama
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — South Alabama scored six times in the sixth inning Sunday afternoon at Dick Howser Stadium to rally for a 7-5 NCAA Tallahassee Regional victory over Southern Miss, eliminating the Golden Eagles from the event.
The Jaguars, who fell victim to the Golden Eagles’ 11-run sixth on Friday, struck for a big frame of their own in that stanza as they battled back after a two-hour rain delay which halted the action in the top of the fifth.
Southern Miss, the designated visiting squad in the game, scored single runs in the first, second, third and fifth innings.
Jake Sandlin, who had two hits and scored three times, homered to right for the seventh time of the season to open the scoring in the first.
Nick Dawson then knocked in a run with an RBI single in the second, before Daniel Keating added a run-scoring single of his own in the third.
The Golden Eagles started the fifth with two walks, before the rains came to delay the game. When the action resumed, USA reliever Ryne Long, who got the final out of the previous inning, hit Chase Scott to load the bases. Keating then knocked in his second run with another single, before Long retired the next three hitters and went on to get 12 in a row before allowing back-to-back doubles in the ninth to Dawson and Sandlin.
The Jaguars, who face Florida State later in the evening and hold a 42-21 record, scored six times against three Golden Eagle pitchers, collecting five hits and taking advantage of four walks and a hit batsman. Cole Billingsley delivered the big hit with a two-run single to highlight the frame for the Jaguars.
USA added another run in the seventh on a grounded into double play.
Lynch, who played four seasons for the Golden Eagles, drove in his team-best 59th run with a groundout in the ninth and Shane McKinley tallied the final two outs to earn the save for the Jags.
Golden Eagle starter Hayden Roberts went four innings and allowed just one hit and three walks with five strikeouts, but was pulled following the two-hour delay. Jake Winston, the third of six Golden Eagle pitchers, suffered the loss and fell to 7-2 on the year.
Long improved to 4-0 for the Jaguars, while McKinley earned his ninth save.
The Golden Eagles, who were ranked for much of the 2016 campaign, finished with a 41-20 record as the team ended its season with its 13th NCAA appearance.
