HATTIESBURG, Miss (WHLT) – A local restaurant began a new program that’s encouraging families to ditch their phones.
The Chick-fil-A in Hattiesburg has joined in on the “Cell Phone Coop” challenge.
It was started by a franchise owner and operator in Georgia and has since been picked up by several locations throughout the United States.
The local Chick- fil-A is offering a free ice cream cone to anyone who can have an entire dine-in meal without checking their phones.
Chick-fil-A Manager, Jim Babbin said families need to spend less time on their phones and more with family, “Our children and grown-ups spend so much time on electronic media, they don’t have much time to talk to each other; as a family. So we’re just trying to promote a little more family unity.”
A Chick-fil-A employee will give the customer a “coop,” after purchasing their meal. The customer will place their phone inside the small box and sit it on the table during the meal.
Once the customer finishes their meal, bring the “coop” back to the counter; the phone must still be in the box.
An employee will then give a free ice cream cone to everyone in the family.
The Chick-fil-A located on Highway 98 in Hattiesburg has been offering this challenge for about two weeks.
Manager Babbin also added that most of the children that come in get excited about the idea of getting a free ice cream cone, so the challenge is really on the parents.
