HATTIESBURG, Miss (WHLT) – According to family members, Eugene Short, died Wednesday, March 16 in Houston, Texas.
Short was born in Macon, Ms but grew up in Hattiesburg; later attending Hattiesburg High School where he lead the basketball team to win their first state championship in 1972.
Family members said after graduation, Short attended Jackson State University for three years; leaving early to enter the National Basketball Association draft.
He was a first-round draft pick for the New York Knicks in 1975. Short only played in the NBA for about two years but made an impact on the community around him.
Short was inducted into Jackson State University Hall of Fame in 2000.
We’re told after Short left the NBA, he spent the rest of his life in Texas with family.
He is survived by his sister, Eva, and brother, Purvis; who also had a career in the NBA.
