JCSD warn residents of Publishers Clearing House scam

JONES COUNTY, Miss – According to the Jones County Sheriff’s Department a “tired and true” scam is plaguing residents.

JCSD authorities said a resident received a call from someone claiming to be with the Publishers Clearing House Sweepstakes.

The scammer said the resident was the winner of $10,000.

Officials say the scammer called the homeowner for an extended amount of time with the resident not responding.

Eventually, the resident responded and received a $10,000 check. After this transaction, the scammer continued to call and was instructed to send money, in cash, for “bank fees.”

However, the $10,000 prize check never cleared the bank account.

Authorities said the homeowner agreed and spent $2,000 of personal funds.

JCSD officials said if a prize is awarded, money will not be exchanged.

If you have received any such phone calls, please report to the Jones County Sheriff’s Department or you can immediately call the Federal Trade Commission at 1-877-382-4357.
