Man pleads guilty in flamingo deaths at Hattiesburg Zoo

HATTIESBURG, Miss. (AP) – The main suspect in the deaths of two Chilean flamingos at the Hattiesburg Zoo has pleaded guilty to grand larceny in Forrest County Circuit Court.

Circuit Court Judge Robert Helfrich sentenced 20-year-old Devin Nottis Tuesday to complete the Regimented Inmate Discipline Program at the Mississippi Department of Corrections.

The RID program is an intensive paramilitary program designed to rehabilitate offenders in a short period of time. The RID program concentrates on many aspects of confinement, to include, but not limited to: discipline therapy, work detail, adult basic education, discipleship study, group counseling, alcohol and drug, and pre-release.

Nottis was indicted in October 2014 for his participation in the flamingos’ death
