JONES COUNTY, Miss – Last week, the Jones County Sheriff’s Department responded to Derrick Hollingsworth’s residence after a man broke into his home looking for a woman.
According to the JCSD, Bertram Duane Merritt, 30 of Soso, ran his vehicle into Hollingsworth’s child’s picnic table. While carrying a knife, Merritt got out of his vehicle then began banging on the front door; yelling a woman’s name.
Hollingsworth told Merritt the woman he was looking for was not there. Merritt looked in closets and the bedroom of Hollingworth’s 4-year-old son.
Merritt attempted to the leave but his vehicle was stuck. Hollingsworth called the JCSD then burst the driver window of Merritt’s vehicle, hitting Merritt in the head and face with a claw tooth hammer. Merritt did manage to escape.
Upon the arrival of deputies, Merritt came out of the woods to seek medical attention.
Merritt was charged with breaking and entering a dwelling. His bond was set at $5,000.
