Solar plant companies looking to build in the Pine Belt

HATTIESBURG, Miss. (WHLT) – The Area Development Partnership has confirmed that two solar plant companies are waiting for approval to start building in the Pine Belt.

Area Development Partnership President Chad Newell  tells WHLT Strata Solar, a company based out of Chapel Hill, NC, is asking the Public Service Commission to place a solar panel farm on Bonhomie Road in Forrest County.

He says Origis Energy, a company out of Miami, wants to build in Lamar County. That farm would be built south of Highway 42, near Sumrall.

Together the companies could bring 800 construction jobs to the Pine Belt in 2016.

According to Newell, if the projects are approved they could be completed by the end of the same year.

On Wednesday, Strata Solar will go before Hattiesburg Planning Commission to ask for a special use permit. That permit would allow the company to place the plant in a residential zone.

The Hattiesburg City Council must approve the permit before construction begins.
