CLEVELAND, Miss. – A candlelight vigil will be held at Delta State University Tuesday night in honor of the professor who as shot and killed on campus Monday morning.
The vigil for Dr. Ethan Schmidt will be at 7 p.m. at the quadrangle on campus. Dr. Schmidt was an American History professor at the university.
The school was placed on lockdown Monday after authorities received a call at 10:18 a.m. that an active shooter was on campus. Students were asked to seek shelter immediately.
Authorities said Schmidt was shot in the head in an office at Jobe Hall.
A Delta State Employee, Shannon Lamb, was named a person of interest in the case Monday afternoon. He was also accused of killing his girlfriend, Amy Prentiss, in Gautier, Miss. Her body also found Monday. That homicide took place before the DSU shooting. Police were able to determine that Lamb was the shooter in both cases.
Lamb died of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head after law enforcement officers found him crossing the Mississippi River Bridge in Greenville, Miss late Monday night. Authorities said he pulled the car over and started to flee the scene. He was found a short time later dead.
The campus lockdown was lifted Monday night. Classes are canceled Tuesday. Counseling services are being offered to students and staff.
