UPDATE: 1 dead, 4 in custody in Pearl River County

UPDATE: According to Pearl River County Investigator Shane Tucker, two more men have been arrested and charged in connection to the death of Brandon Penry Jr. of Columbia.

Kenneth Johnson Jr., 22, and Gary J. Daughtry, 23, were arrested Thursday evening by Pearl River County and Marion County officials.

Both have been charged with accessory and tampering with evidence in the homicide investigation.

Tucker also tells us charges for Chadrick Devon Daniel have been upgraded. He now faces accessory and tampering with evidence charges.

Gerrod O’Neal Howard’s charges have also been upgraded. He now faces murder and tampering with evidence charges.

Authorities say all 5 men were traveling in the SUV that investigators found wrecked on Poplarville-Baxterville Road, when Howard shot Penry multiple times.

Bond hearings for all four men will be held in Pearl River County today.


PEARL RIVER COUNTY, MS (WHLT) – One person is dead and two people are in custody following the discovery of a deceased man Wednesday afternoon.

Authorities were searching for Chadrick Devon Daniel, 20, and Gerrod O’Neal Howard, 20, as persons of interests. They have since turned themselves in Thursday afternoon.

Pearl River County Coroner Derek Turnage has identified the victim as Brandon Penry Jr., 31, of Columbia.

According to Pearl River County Investigator Shane Tucker, deputies were called to Poplarville-Baxterville Road Wednesday when a driver saw what looked to be the scene of a one-vehicle accident.

Tucker says Penry’s body was inside of an SUV with all four doors open. He says Turnage had suffered from multiple gunshot wounds, which made them begin to investigate the accident as a homicide.

The Mississippi Bureau of Investigations Crime Scene Unit was called out to process the scene.

Tucker says they believe Penry was killed between 11 p.m. Tuesday and 1 a.m. Wednesday.

Daniel and Howard are charged with tampering with physical evidence.

However, authorities say more charged and arrests are expected.
