Carey’s Knight Inducted Into Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame

August 4, 2015 – Steve Knight, athletic director and head coach of men’s basketball at William Carey University, was inducted into the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame during the 2015 induction ceremony at the Capital City Convention Center in Jackson on August 1.

Knight, in his 33rd season as head coach for the Crusaders, is Mississippi’s all-time winningest basketball coach with 610 victories, seven conference championships and nine national tournament appearances. During the 2013-2014 season, Knight’s Crusaders captured the Southern States Athletic Conference title and posted a 28-3 record, including a perfect 18-0 record in conference play. He has also been recognized as National Coach of the Year by the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics.

As athletic director since 1987, Knight has directed a strong expansion in athletic offerings. The university now fields 16 teams in eight sports, including new teams in indoor track and field. During his tenure, Crusader teams have won over 30 conference championships and made more than 40 trips to national tournaments.

Knight played basketball for the Hattiesburg High School Tigers and helped lead the team to a state championship before enrolling at the University of Southern Mississippi. He played both basketball and baseball for Southern Miss and was drafted into the Seattle Mariners organization. He played professional baseball for two seasons before beginning his coaching career.

Knight was one of six inducted into the Sports Hall of Fame’s 2015 class. He is joined in the class by NFL star Brett Favre; NBA standout Clarence Weatherspoon; two-time All-SEC running back Mike Dennis; Mississippi College and Saints champion Fred McAfee; and Gwen White, a pioneer of women’s sports in Mississippi.
