MDOT dedicates memorial highway

POPLARVILLE, Miss. – It was an emotional occasion as family and friends of the late Deputy Len Rowell gathered to remember his service.

On June 28, 1994 the small town of Poplarville was turned upside down.

Pearl River County Sheriff’s Deputy Len Rowell was gunned down during a routine traffic stop. He was just 24-years-old and a newlywed.

21 years later, MDOT (Mississippi Department of Transportation) is dedicating a section of Interstate 59 in Pearl River County to Rowell, naming it Deputy Len J. Rowell Memorial Highway.

“We hope that everyone that drives down I-59 that sees that sign, it makes them realize that Deputy Rowell paid the ultimate price in service for his community,” said Doug Rowell.

Rowell’s family says though he died more than two decades ago, the recent deaths of law enforcement officers in the country have stirred up familiar feelings.
