Three Southern Miss Pitchers Selected in MLB Draft

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Three Southern Miss right-handed pitcher were taken in the third and final day of the Major League Baseball First-Year Draft Wednesday afternoon.

Cody Carroll was chosen in the 22nd round by the New York Yankees (663rd pick), while Ryan Milton got tabbed in the 23rd round by the Detroit Tigers (700th pick) and James McMahon was picked in the 24th round by the Colorado Rockies (707th pick).

Carroll, from Mt. Juliet, Tenn., finished his junior season in 2015 for the Golden Eagles, posting a 5-5 record with a 3.08 ERA over 15 starting assignments. In his three-year career, the 6-foot-5 right-handed pitcher collected an 8-7 record with a 3.50 ERA and fanned 131 with just 67 walks in 149 innings. Carroll earned his first Conference USA Pitcher of the Week honors once during this past spring.

Milton, from Albany, La., finished his two-year Golden Eagle career with a 1-0 mark his senior campaign with 10 saves and a 3.13 ERA. He fanned 24 and walked 12 in 23 innings of work. He finished Southern Miss with a 4-3 record and 12 saves, which puts him tied for ninth on Golden Eagle career saves chart.

McMahon, who put together an All-America season with an 11-1 record a 1.56 ERA, made the conversion from reliever his first three seasons to a dominant starter in his final campaign. He posted a 14-3 career record for Southern Miss with a 3.21 ERA in 146 career innings. He also added four saves in his career.

The three Golden Eagle pitchers joined 2016 signee and centerfielder Josh Magee (Franklinton, La./Franklinton HS), who taken in the fifth round by the San Diego Padres (147th pick) on Tuesday.

This is the third-straight year that the Golden Eagles have had at least two players drafted, including four a year ago when Bradley Roney (8th/Atlanta), Conor Fisk (24th/Toronto), Mason Robbins (25th/Chicago White Sox) and Taylor Nunez (27th/Boston) were chosen.
