The following is an official press release from The University of Southern Mississippi.

HATTIESBURG, Miss. — The University of Southern Mississippi has made the decision to withhold its men’s basketball team from postseason competition following the 2014-15 regular season as a result of an ongoing university and NCAA inquiry of the basketball program related to the 2012-13 and 2013-14 academic years.  The university has informed both Conference USA and the NCAA of its decision.  Accordingly, Southern Miss will not participate in the 2015 Conference USA Men’s Basketball Championship Tournament and will not be eligible to participate in the 2015 NCAA Men’s Basketball Championship.

The team and coaching staff were informed of the decision by Director of Athletics Bill McGillis this afternoon.

“I am saddened and extremely disappointed for the members of our men’s basketball team, who will not be able to participate in the postseason this year, as well as for our new coaching staff and fans,” McGillis said.  “This self-imposed penalty was a painful, but necessary, decision based on information gathered during the review process and available to the university at this time.”

The university is continuing to work cooperatively with the NCAA during the ongoing review.  In order to maintain the integrity of our joint process, and pursuant to NCAA policy, we cannot comment further regarding any details of our review at this time.
