School Districts Loan Buses to HPSD

More than 25-hundred students are
bused to Hattiesburg Public Schools each day.

The school district has 37 school
buses but 35 of those are damaged.

Windows are busted out, glass is
everywhere. Even after the buses are repaired, a thorough check will be needed
for each of them before they can be used.

“We sustained major damage to our
shop major damage to our office complex.” Willie Burton, director of
facility maintenance at Hattiesburg schools says about 8 local school districts
from across the state are helping with transportation.

 “Marion County, Lamar County, Perry
County, Greene county, pearl public schools and Jefferson Davis county
schools.”

About 25 buses have been loaned to the
district.

“We have a full fleet of buses we
haven't stopped any normal operations.”

Officials are still assessing the
damage done to the transportation complex.  Burton says they're expecting an estimated
dollar amount to be released on Friday. As for now officials are trying to work
around the destruction – operating out of Hattiesburg high school's parking
lot.

“We're resilient, we're going to come back, and
we're making the best of the worst situation.”
